My instructable teaches people how to make fried rice with egg in six simple steps. It is written in Chinese but there is an English version posted in my wordpress. Chinese name of my recipe is 蛋炒饭. It is in 食谱比赛 whose address is http://bit.ly/asiancookingcontest1.

If you think my recipe is nice, please vote for it. Thank you!

(Notice: No requirement for the amount of vegetables, add them as much as you want.)

Tools:

  • A pan
  • A spatula
  • A cutting board
  • A knife
  • A stovetop oven

Cook:

(Notice: It takes about 5 to 10 minutes to cook the fried rice.)

Step 1: Cut shiitake into half an inch cubes (or cut mushrooms into slices).

Step 2: Pour the oil into pan and use the highest level of power to heat it.

Step 3: When the oil is hot enough (usually when it can flow as fast as water), turn down the power to medium high and start to fry shiitake, corn and peas together. Make sure there is still a little oil left after 15 to 20 seconds because you need oil for the eggs and rice. If not, add some.

Step 4: Move the vegetables to one side of the pan, break the eggshell and put whole eggs to the other side of the pan and then fry them. After the eggs are fairly cooked, mix everything in the pan.

Step 5: Add rice into the pan. Turn the power to max level and fry everything for about 30 seconds.

Step 6: Ture the power to lowest level, add some salt according to your favor and stir everything. It is better to add less salt at first because if the rice tastes too light, just add a little more. After the salt is uniforemly distributed, move fried rice to a dish.

Step 7: Enjoy your fried rice.

(Caution: Be careful when using knife and when adding vegetables to the hot oil, oil may splash.)

It was hard to record my thoughts when testing the project. Sometime there was no time to do the record. Sometimes my hands were too dirty to operate my phone. If I record after I finished testing the project, My thoughts may be different from the first thoughts when I was doing the project. It took me about half an hour to complete each of the usability reporting forms. When I was doing the usability report, I found that I should post some photos of my project to make it more easier for readers to understand. Also, I listed main materials of my project but I did not clarify how much the materials should be. I came up with an idea that I could divide my instructions into several sections to make them clearer if it was possible. I was surprised because one of the instructables was really complex but another one was really simple, and that complex instructable had a Chinese version which was much simpler than its English version. The simple one was simple enough but in fact it could be simpler. The hardest part was preparing the food before cooking. Because that was my first time to make food in the instructables I had to read the instructions carefully and check them after each step. The easiest part was cooking. I just put the food into a pan or an oven and waited them to be cooked. The total project named “Potato Clock” was very easy. There was no hard part. Here are my suggestions. If the project does not take a long time, keep the recorder on and if you have any thought just speak to it. you can cut the record after completing the project. Or you can memorize your thoughts when doing project and record later. When writing the report, if cannot find a problem about some aspect, skip it and do not focus on finding one because improper response may cause misleading.

I began my instructable on November 19 and I completed it the same day night. First I listed the main materials needed for the project and then I wrote the process to complete the project in steps. My project is about baking, so I wrote an instructable which was almost the same as the instructables online. My project is very easy so I did not use any graphics content in my instructable. But if graohics content is necessary, I will add some. I completed my instructable using compyter so I only checked it in terms of desktop. When producing the final version of my instructable, the different thing I will do is adding some photos about the process of doing my project to make readers understand my instructable more easily. Also, I will write a list of caution to tell readers about the dangerous factors when doing my project. The same thing I will do for my final instructable is listing the materials needed in the project and write the instructable in steps. The advices I would give the people who attempt to create their first instructable are listing materials and supplies. Then write instructions into several steps. The steps need to be simple and clear but make sure they can be understood by readers. Use photos below the instructions to help readers understand more easily.

Ingredients needed: An egg, cold rice, shiitake, corn and green peas.

Step 2: Pour appropriate amount of oil into pan and use the highest level of power to heat it.

Step 3: When the oil is hot enough, turn down the power a little bit and start to fry shiitake, corn and peas together. Be careful about the hot oil. Make sure there is still a little oil left after 15 to 20 seconds because we need oil for the egg and rice. If not, add some.

Step 4: Move the vegetables to one side of the pan and add egg to the other side of the pan and fry the egg.

Step 5: After the egg clot mix the contents and then add rice into the pan. Turn the power to max level and fry everything for about 30 seconds.

Think Aloud

“Think  Aloud” requires testers to say whatever they are looking at, thinking, doing and feeling when they are testing the project. It is helpful  because testers can know what their first thoughts are and usually the first thought is very important, that always express the true thoughts of the testers. Although the comments about the project may sound bad but they are really good advices. When I am doing my instructable project, I can note my thoughts and feelings and after finishing the project I will see my notes and then find defects of my project.

Hallway Testing

This usability testing method requires project to be tested by people who are selected randomly rather than a group of trained testers. That is what we do to test each one’s peoject. Three students are selected randomly to test another student’s project. We are all students who have similar abilities so the comments from those three students are the most effective. For my project, I can let my friends test my project first and give me advices.

Remote Usability Testing

This method facilitates evaluations being done in the context of the tested person’s other project. For example, before meeting someone, we may collect some information about him such as his style, character and so on. So by looking at the tested person’s other project, we can know his style, advantages and disadvantages. That will make us do the usability teasing more easily.

Expert Review

This method means that letting experts with experience in the field to evaluate the usability of a product. The experts in the school can be professors. They can provide professional advices. For my project, I can call my parents to test it because both of them are good at cooking. When I am doing usability testing for my classmates, I can also find someone who has experence in the field of that project to give me some advices.

A/B Testing

A/B testing is an experimental approach to web design. It  aims to identify changes to web pages that increase or maximize an outcome of interest. There are A and B two types of testing. A type might be the currently used version, while B is modified in some respect. So by comparing the initial instructable and the modified instructable, we can find some other places that need to be modified.

I signed in Klout with my twitter account. The account is my name, Peng Ren. From the topic about “learn more about Klout”, it says that “Klout digs deep into social media to see how people influence each other, and to help everyone be rewarded for being themselves.” so people can add topics they like on social media. In addition to the account of twitter, I linked my LinkedIn account to Klout. My current score is 10.

Document Overview

The purpose of this document is to teach people how to fold a origami swan. Its primary audience should be the people who is interested in folding. The secondary audience may be kindergarten teachers that need to prepare a class to teach the kids folding.

Content

There are a lot of names under the images. These are irrelevant content. Between step three and step four another step should be added. For example, a picture shows that only one side is folded can be add so audience can see the step between step three and step four. Literal instruction should be written under each picture.

Structure

On several computers the pictures which guide audience to fold the swan cannot be showed. “Sign up” and “Log in” links are showed in inappropriate place, they overlap with pictures.

Voice/Style

On the first reading, how to do from step three to step four made me confused for a while because there was a big jump between those two steps. The voice si too low and too fast. So literal steps are necessary.

Presentation/Design

As mentioned above, step three and step four are confusing. In all steps, the piece of paper is hold by the maker. It is better if put it on a table so the shape of that paper can be seen clearly.

Additional Considerrations

There is no issues taht could create cultural misunderstandings or legal problems. The document will be easier to use if the maker uploads a video to show how to fold rather than some pictures with voice. Also, the author should anwser the comments in time because the problems in comments are always the most confusing ones in folding the swan.

Before writing the first writing assignment, I needed to interview three persons. And three genres should be analyzed. The second assignment did not include any interview and I only need to write the analysis of one website. Moreover, screenshot was used in the second writing assignment. Both writing have executive summary, overview, analysis and conclusion. They are required to be analyzed according to six categories. And both assignment relate to my field of study.

I started the assignment last week and completed it on Sunday, the day before the due date. The time I spent on writing the first assignment was about four days except for the interview. But I had one week to think about the second assignment and improve it.

Unfortunately I did not have any outside help to ask for in order to complete my assignment. I just read the draft after I finish it and correct some errors and add or delete some text.

I used a chat software to produce the screenshots because the software had that function. I screenshot the website according to the analysis I wrote in my assignment. I used Lucidchart to do the sitemap.  Both of them are easy to use.

I may find someone to read my final major assignment when I complete it. I will spend a long time to prepare just as the second writing assignment. I would like to suggest that find a website which is easy to be analyzed. In other word, the website should not be too simple to analyze. Start the assignment early and find someone to read it, he or she may come up with some nice idea.
